Quickly, instinctively even, before blood loss caught up with me and seemingly guided by my sword and vague memories of my past, I approached the fallen gryphon. Its massive chest still heaved with residual spasms, the last vestiges of life clinging to its legendary form. I knew I had to act fast.
With trembling hands, I positioned the Blade of Shadows over the gryphon's sternum. I took a deep breath, steeling myself for what was to come, and plunged the blade deep into the creature's chest.
The resistance was immense. The gryphon's hide, even in death, was tougher than any armor I had encountered. But the Blade of Shadows lived up to its name, slicing through flesh and bone. I drew the blade down, splitting open the chest cavity.
As I peeled back the layers of muscle and tissue, the stench of blood and viscera filled the air. My stomach churned, but I pressed on. Finally, there it was, the gryphon's heart, a massive organ easily the size of my torso. Unlike a normal heart, this one still pulsed with an otherworldly energy, glowing faintly in the dim light of the cave.
I reached in, my hand slick with blood and other fluids. The heart was hot to the touch, almost burning. With a grunt of effort, I tore the organ free from within its chest, severing it from the veins that had once pumped lifeblood through the legendary beast.
There was no time to waste. My own injuries were severe, and I could feel my strength ebbing with each passing moment.
With great effort, I raised the Blade of Shadows once more. The sword seemed to sing in anticipation as I brought it down, piercing the gryphon's heart. The moment the blade made contact, a shockwave of energy pulsed through the cavern, nearly knocking me off my feet.
Immediately, I felt a rush of power unlike anything I had experienced before. It was as if I had plunged my hand into a river of pure vitality. The energy flowed from the heart, through the Blade of Shadows, and into my battered body.
I watched in awe as my mangled left hand began to reform before my eyes.
Shattered bones knit back together with audible cracks and pops. Severed tendons reattached themselves, and torn muscle fibers wove back into place. It was weeks' worth of healing compressed into mere seconds.
The pain was excruciating. Every nerve ending screamed as it was reforged, sending waves of agony up my arm and throughout my body. I gritted my teeth, fighting the urge to pull away.
I knew that to stop now would be to waste this precious opportunity.
As the healing progressed, I could feel the power of the gryphon's heart flowing into me. It was more than just physical healing, I could sense the creature's essence, its very being, becoming a part of me. Flashes of memory not my own flickered through my mind.
Memories of clouds, and hunts, and prey.
